So I must be crazy – I’ve decided to go back to school again! After much debate over the past year, I’ve enrolled in the Virginia Tech Science and Technology Studies program offered here in Northern VA. I’m kind of shooting for a second Masters, but depending on how things go, and if I can make an eight year commitment (yikes!), then the PhD is a possibility too.
I’m taking “History of Military Technology” to start, and am signed up for “History of Science” this fall. Tonight was my first class, and it was very exciting. Besides the usual introductions, we had a presentation by a PhD candidate on his dissertation. It was an intriguing topic, and made me realize I could do something like that too one day! The course is going to keep me busy with a lot of reading – a book a week this summer.
We’ll see how it goes – but I feel smarter already!
That’s cool, Matt. The “History of Military Technology” sounds like it would be an interesting course. Amber and I bought the DVD version of Great Battles of the Ancient World and we’ve been slowly working our way through the lectures and enjoying them very much.
I suggest you check out Max Boot’s book “War Made New” which I jammed in right before my class started. It was an excellent read, and covered a few battles in a couple of eras I wasn’t that familiar with (1400s and 1880-WWI). His focus is on the “revolution in military affairs” concept, and he writes a good book. Thanks for your comment!
Thanks for the recommendation for War Made New. I picked it up from the library last weekend and am well past the half-way point.
