BA Day 4: crowds and steak

A couple quick notes since we’re off to Uruguay for the day. Yesterday’s photos are up, and I’m linking to the interesting ones with people in them.

Yesterday was the most adventure-like day yet. The alarm clock had two power outages around 8 am. We slept late, took a cab over to Plaza Dorrega, a ride that reminded us that Argentine rules of the road (including the painted lines) are “suggestions.” And drivers honk whenever possible.

The Sunday market and street fair in the San Telmo district were a lot of fun. 20070812market.jpg My first impressions were the piano on the street (we saw more than one–don’t they worry about breaking it?), and the massive crowd. We didn’t see anything that blew us away (antiques are cool, but I’m not really into buying them), but stumbled across our first touristy tango show.

We had lunch off of this cool looking street at Papa Deus, and I ate with a flute player behind my head. We headed down Calle Defensas through the longest street fair I’ve ever seen, and ended up at Plaza del Mayo. Again, there was nothing I wanted to buy, but the mate cups, tango signs, and some unrecognizable objects were interesting just to look at.

We managed the best backwards picture ever at the plaza. 20070812plazademayo-us.jpg Off the plaza, we toured the National Cathedral where San Martin is entombed; I liked its big doors. There are a lot more pictures in our photo gallery.

We finished up the day at La Chacra, a parilla steakhouse with a stuffed horse at the door and wild boors on the walls. Our nice, grandfatherly waiter spoke no English, but covered my white coat (draped on the chair next to me) with a tablecloth before he served our meal. Turned out to be a good move, as I spilled on my white shirt.

Matt loved his “sucking pig” (we think they meant “suckling”) and my T-bone was (according to Matt) a great cut of meat, but the medium I ordered bled all over my plate, so I expect I should have ordered it more on the done side. Matt ended up eating most of his pig and my cow, and is not sure he will ever eat again.

That’s it for now, we’re off to Uruguay!

Great photos guys! What I’d like to know is how they keep the piano in tune when it’s outdoors!

  • I’m surprised that you were able to get a piece of meat that rare since it has been my experience that Latin/South American restaurants tend to cook meat well done. And a friend of mine who is part Cuban likes it well done. Going to steakhouses with her is fun because I like to see the looks of horror on the waiters faces. Larry would have liked your steak because he like his meat to say “moo” when he sticks a fork in it.
