Where in the world… by allegra

…is ajmatt blog? I’ll give you a hint: it’s cold.

Give up? We’re in Montréal!

Why Montréal in the dead of winter? Matt enjoys giving the gift of surprise travel. He’s been tormenting me for weeks now with dead-end hints about where we’re going. Pack warm clothes… but maybe we’re going to the Caribbean. Leave your car at work (5 minutes form the airport)… but who said anything about flying? He was quite pleased with himself yesterday on our way to Dulles when I hadn’t figured it out.

Matt and I like to travel in the off-season. And I think the only way to get more off-season than February in Montréal would be to come in January. According to Frommer’s, the average high in January is 22°F and February stays around 24°F. Today was a balmy 30°F (not counting wind chill), but we’re looking at -3°F tonight. Hopefully that happens after we get back to the hotel.

I’ve never visited a place with this much snow on the ground, so I am most amused by this trash can (on the ground in front of the obelisk), barely peeking out from a drift. And these benches, some of which are completely covered.

More snowy pictures and geeky museums in the photo gallery.

Wow, that does look cold… but fun! I love the idea of surprise off-season travel, that sounds like a great way to do it. And I love that picture of the benches. It just makes me want to sit right down and watch the apparently non-existent foot traffic go by. It is just so cozy and inviting!

Your pictures remind me a bit of when Matt and I visited Vienna on our honeymoon in mid-March. We were walking the grounds of the Schonbrunn Palace and trying to imagine what it would look like when the shrubs weren’t bare sticks and the flower garden areas were in bloom.
