I love the idea of surprise off-season travel, that sounds like a great way to do it. And I love that picture of the benches. It just makes me want to sit right down and watch the apparently non-existent foot traffic go by. It is just so cozy and inviting! Your pictures remind me a bit of when Matt and I visited Vienna on our honeymoon in mid-March. We were walking the grounds of the Schonbrunn Palace and trying to imagine what it would look like when the shrubs weren't bare sticks and the flower garden areas were in bloom.
