Urban birds by allegra
I spotted a cardinal this morning on the light post outside my bedroom window. While the pictures of him didn’t turn out great (darn screen), it reminded me of a bird Matt photographed about a month ago.
This bird was huge, had giant claws, and sat on our back fence for close to an hour. It was brash enough to stare down a squirrel, and the squirrels in our backyard aren’t exactly wilting flowers. They are more on the mean and greedy end of the personality spectrum. (Full disclosure: I hate squirrels with a passion.)
So here’s the bird, now known as my hero. Any experts know what it is?

Hmmm … you may have a Red Shouldered Hawk. See if this link helps. Almost for sure it’s a hawk of some type. What ever it is, it’s a cool siting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Red_shouldered_hawk_closeup.jpg
