38 signs

Last week Eva started requesting her signing songs and videos by wandering in circles and saying “Baaaabeeee.” I expect her transition toward talking means she will stop learning signs soon, and decided I’d better count them before this phase fades away into nonstop chatter.

I looked at our Baby Signing Time videos and typed up [...]

Pink

The war is over; pink wins. I hereby submit to incorporating pink willingly and without complaint into Eva’s wardrobe.

Did I ever stand a chance against polka dot butterfly wings?

Early debating

Eva pulls her stuffed sheep out of her toy basket.

EVA: Mama.

MATT: Eva, the sheep says, “Baa baa.”

EVA: Mama.

MATT: Baabaabaa.

EVA: Mamama.

MATT: Eva, trust me. I’ve seen sheep. They say, “Baaaaa baa.”

EVA: Mama.

Toddler: 1. Daddy: 0. Mama: Might shed a tear when Eva learns what the sheep really says.

Summer travels: North Carolina

Remember when I mentioned we took a baby to Quebec City? Less than month later we took a toddler – and not just any toddler, one that was teething – to Princeton, North Carolina for the annual Hartley reunion.

The trip was a great opportunity for Eva to spend a few days with her great-grandfather, [...]

She speaks

For several weeks now, Eva has said “ah” while she signs “all done.” [...]

Summer travels: Quebec City

Over Fourth of July weekend, Matt surprised me with a trip to Quebec City as a slightly belated 30th birthday present. And by “surprise” I mean he told me two days in advance. That’s about as surprising as you can get when traveling with a 13-month-old.

Quebec City is the type of place we love [...]

Somehow, on my birthday Eva got two presents. The beauty of motherhood is that I enjoyed her gifts more than mine.

One

It is amazing what happens in 12 months:

We celebrated Eva’s first birthday a little over a week ago. It was an event – family flew in from the West Coast and we threw a party. You should know that the last time Matt and I threw a party, we were getting married. It [...]
