Last November, Matt and I went to see Quantum of Solace with our friends Ben and Marissa. We saw our first preview for Star Trek, which Matt had already been talking about with great excitement.

When the release date flashed across the screen, Ben leaned over and said, “That comes out two days after your due date.” Matt responded by shaking his fists at the ceiling and saying, “Noooooo!”

Even though our due date moved up to four days prior to the release, baby girl decided to let us go to one more movie, and we caught an impromptu matinee this afternoon.

Though we’re grateful for the opportunity, I must note that life has already changed – we had to take aisle seats instead of that perfect center seat, and I was using my left arm for lumbar support by the end of the two hours. (Also – could someone have warned me about the opening scene?)

On the other hand, this is the first movie we’ve seen since November, so it’s not like our life is changing that much. Until baby girl starts requesting animated features, we might be seeing one movie a year instead of two.

Our review of Star Trek? I liked it, though I don’t know much about the original series, and Matt gave it 8 stars on IMDB.

We promise, one of these days we’ll post photos of our daughter. And believe me, that can’t come soon enough.

Jet lag + Matt is sick + holiday + Allegra is sick = 2 slugs who watch waaaay too many movies

According to the latest estimates, Matt and I collectively watched 20 movies over the last two weeks. Movies from Netflix, movies from Comcast on Demand, movies from Amazon Unbox.

We even darkened the door of a brick-and-mortar video rental shop—twice! And I stood around dumbly trying to remember how such businesses worked. Oh the desperation…

Which is all sort of good (aside from the “sick” part), since we like to download stuff, and we never actually make it to the theater anymore, unless it’s some long-awaited re-creation of a childhood obsession.

Out of 20-some movies, which are starting to run together, I give you the standouts:

The Waitress: love the anti-chick-flick

Stardust: fantasy fairy tale happiness

A Good Year: mmm… want a French chateau

The Matador: unlikely, shocking comedy

Bourne Ultimatum: great action flick

The Man with No Name trilogy: Clint Eastwood redefined westerns

You can miss: License to Wed. Unbelievable, underdeveloped characters. Silly story line. Major plot holes. The only redeeming value is that Mandy Moore’s character wears pretty dresses.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming (i.e. Matt goes back to school next week).

Of course, political correctness has kicked in, and this reviewer puts together the best arguments yet why the approach the writers are taking is all wrong.

GI Joe – a real person, Medal of Honor winner, once a Marine, always a Marine!

I will risk further lameness by admitting my excited anticipation of the new Nancy Drew movie. Yes, I be shelling out $10 viewing the movie in an actual theater (so retro). I think the last time I did that was for TMNT (which, incidentally, was quite good). Anyone sense a trend of childhood nostalgia?
